Do Collagen Supplements Actually Work?
We tested ingestible beauty powders, so you don’t have to.FEB 24, 2021 11:39PMBY ELLE TEAM (ELLE MAGAZINE)
Who hasn’t listened to a juice cleanse addict attest to how “glowy” her skin looks since she liquefied her diet? But juice cleanses are junior varsity wellness torture. ADVERTISINGRecently, health and beauty brands have upped the ante by creating super-charged beauty elixirs like liquid collagen, activated charcoal lemonade, clay shots, and now, ingestible powders designed to make you better looking.Think of collagen powders as the Tang of skin care—mix them into water and voila!—glowy skin, no chewing needed. Featuring concentrated ingredients that promise everything from firmer skin to renewed vitality, Moon Juice’s ayurvedic-inspired “dusts” and WelleCo’s green ingredient-packed Super Elixir have been championed by wellness poster girls like Gwyneth Paltrow and Elle Macpherson respectively.Experts are sceptical about the efficacy of said powders, but not completely dismissive. “Some powders contain high doses of nutrients, antioxidants, and probiotics,” says Jessica Weiser, MD a dermatologist at the New York Dermatology Group. “I would prefer to have my patients ingest these important components from natural sources and fresh food as opposed to powder or other supplements.” Dana James, a triple board certified nutritionist (who, full disclosure, offers her own version of a beauty powder) and functional medicine specialist, agrees. “The best option is to have a fresh green juice versus a powdered form. However, if that’s unavailable to you, then the powder form could be a good option,” she says. The scariest thing about these products to me was the potential taste. Here, a full breakdown on what each one tastes like, what the supposed benefits are, and the experts’ thoughts.
MOON JUICE BEAUTY DUST
Ingredients: Pearl powder, goji, schisandra, rehmannia.Supposed Benefits: Using avurvedic principles and ingredients, the dust is designed to, “calm the nerves, increase collagen production, firm tissue, and fortify hair, skin, and nails.”Expert Opinion:Gwyneth Paltrow has endorsed Moon Juiceon Goop. James cites research on schisandra showing that it is an adaptogen that can stabilise the stress response and that it also has antioxidant and other physiologic benefits.Taste: With a light earthy flavour, this could pass for iced tea with a hint of sweetness. It didn’t dissolve seamlessly in cold water, though, and a thick sludge accumulated at the bottom of my glass.Rating: 7/10US$52/25 servings.
ISAGENIX Collagen Elixir – AVAILABLE IN THE A+C ONLINE STORE!
Ingredients: Synchronised marine collagen (5g per serve), vitamin C, biotin, zinc, goji, aloe vera, acerola berry, chamomile. Supposed Benefits: “Isagenix Collagen Elixir can give you a boost of collagen which naturally declines as we age and helps nourish your skin from within to keep you radiantly beautiful.”Expert Opinion:Studies have shown that consuming marine collagen can increase collagen density by almost 30 per cent, resulting in firmer, more hydrated skin. Similarly, wrinkles and texture were also reduced, by 14.4 per cent and 16 per cent respectively, over four weeks.Taste: This collagen supplement has a delightful superfruit flavour, thanks to its key botanical ingredients.Rating: 9/10AU$49.99/10 servings.Brought to you by Isagenix.
THE SUPER ELIXIR
Ingredients: 45 ingredients including wheatgrass, goji berry, lactobacillus, spirulina, grapeseed extract, milk thistle extract, zinc, biotin, and many others.Supposed Benefits: This Elle Macpherson-approved “whole food elixir” is designed to “boost your nutritional profile and keep your body within a desired alkaline range.”Expert Opinion: “I can’t recommend things with a million ingredients,” says Valori Treloar, MD, a dermatologist and certified nutrition specialist who practices integrative dermatology. “The more you add, you’re increasing the risk that someone will have problems [with an ingredient] as a gut irritant or as an allergen or intolerance.” Also, experts offer mixed reviews on the alkaline diet.Taste: When mixed in water, this pond water-coloured drink boasts a surprisingly pleasant flavour. I tasted mostly lemon with some green undertones. However, it didn’t dissolve well in water.Rating: 6/10.AU$85/300g.
BEAUTY CHEF GLOW INNER BEAUTY POWDER
Ingredients: Chickpeas, lentils and other beans; linseeds, maqui berry, chia seeds, green tea powder, ginger turmeric, quinoa, and more “fermented foods and probiotics.”Supposed Benefits: “Nourishes and enhances skin from the inside.”Expert Opinion: There is definitely evidence that probiotics can be good for the skin. But both Treloar and Weiser recommend never using any of these products as a meal replacement. “Ultimately I believe that eating a well-balanced whole food diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruit, protein, healthy fats, whole grains, and of course lots of water,” Dr. Weiser says.Taste: It looks and smells like grape juice. It was a bit sweet at first, but ultimately delicious. It has a slight aftertaste of moss, but otherwise it was the best-tasting of the bunch.Rating: 9/10AU$59.95/150g
SPARKLE COLLAGEN PEPTIDE SUPPLEMENT
Ingredients: Collagen, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid.Supposed Benefits: A clinical study showed a 7-15% increase in skin elasticity after using the oral collagen contained in this powder.Expert Opinion: James is sceptical about the benefits of ingestible collagen. When you digest protein, which is what collagen is, it gets broken down into amino acids. “It’s really at the discretion of the body how [the amino acids] will be used,” James says. So if your body needs them for more crucial functions, such as making neurotransmitters or rebuilding muscle, your face may not show results.Taste: When mixed in water, it looks like cloudy lemonade. It has an artificial sweetener meets citrus taste that’s tart, like Crystal Light. Overall, it was palatable, though it would taste better in juice or a smoothie. Or mixed with gin and lime juice and made into a gimlet.Rating: 5/10AU$28.50/30 day supply
PERRICONE MD SUPER BERRY WITH ACAI DIETARY SUPPLEMENT POWDER
Ingredients: Berry extracts which provide anthocyanins, ellagic acid, polysaccharides, and quinic acid.Supposed Benefits: According to the company, this product provides “antioxidant protection to help defer the visible signs of aging.”Expert Opinion: Treloar is firmly on #TeamWholeFood. “Have a bowl of mixed berries instead!” she recommends. “It’s not just the polyphenols [and antioxidants] that are beneficial. A lot of the benefit we get is from the non-digestible fibres and their effect on gut flora, which can be pretty profound.” According to Weiser, “Vitamin C is known to be absorbed from dietary supplements to a certain extent.”Taste: It mixed well in cold water, and turned the colour of beet juice. The sweet, fruity taste (thank you, Stevia) was almost too sweet. It reminded me of Gatorade, but I bet it would be delicious as a popsicle or blended into a smoothie.Rating: 6/10AU$75/30-day supply
BEAUTY SCOOP NUTRITIONAL BEAUTY SUPPLEMENT
Ingredients: Protein (from whey and soy), magnesium, collagen, various vitamins, zinc oxide, and other supplements.Supposed Benefits: The company claims that this powder has proven benefits on skin, hair, and nails. They have studies to back up their claims.Expert Opinion: It’s not that different from a lot of protein powder supplements out there. James points out that collagen is usually derived from animals like cows and pigs, so if you’re a vegetarian, be sure to check the label.Taste: Do NOT drink this plain. I tried it in water and it tasted like a pulverized Nilla wafer mixed with plaster dust. So I mixed a half scoop in with a Kusmi Chai tea. It was a bit sludgy and didn’t dissolve easily. Add it to a vanilla milkshake and call it a day.Rating: 1/10(Beauty Scoop Nutritional Beauty Supplement is not currently shipping to Australia)US$70/one-month supply

It’s that time of year when our hands start to become dry, flaky or even crack due to the colder weather. Maybe you also have some spots on your hand from summer sun damage, or feel that your hands are looking older than you are. Here are 5 tips to keep your hands in great shape this winter!
Just like we exfoliate the body, exfoliating our hands is important too! Sometimes dry hands can be in part from dead skin build up. Think, if you applied lotion to your body while wearing clothes, not much would make it to your skin! Exfoliating allows your products to penetrate better, softens the skin, increases cell turnover and gives them a radiance! Our scrubs are an easy way to exfoliate. You can exfoliate your face, and then scrub the remainder on your hands too.
If you see an Esthetician, or are an Esthetician a great hand treatment while masking is our 20% Zesty Orange Peel or 20% Phyto Pumpkin Peel for a couple minutes to not only exfoliate but lighten discolorations. Then remove with a hot towel and massage with our Cranberry Body Lotion! I love to mix it with our Grapeseed Oil for more slip.
Keeping our hands hydrated is important during the fall and winter months. Because of the low humidity levels, the air wants to steal the moisture in your skin! When you apply your morning facial moisturizer add some to your hands, another time at lunch, and later on in the day. If you wash your hands a lot, applying after each wash is great too. Make sure you’re using a natural and non-drying soap whenever possible.
Whenever it is below 50 degrees I recommend wearing gloves, and good ones! Even just a minute or two outside everyday over the winter often causes dryness, redness and even cracking on the hands. I have had many clients get good gloves and become religious about using them all the time and their dry hands miraculously disappear! Do the same for your neck by wearing a scarf, and when possible your face as well. If you are going to be outside for long periods of time consider applying a layer of Restoraderm Crème to protect from dehydration and any windburn.
If you choose to not wear gloves while driving whether it’s summer or winter keep some SPF in your purse and apply before driving, even if it’s for a few minutes! This is the best anti-aging treatment you can do on a daily basis, as well and protect from future discolorations.
Nightly serums and moisturizers are a great way to correct damage and repair. Depending on your concern, here are a few options.
- Dryness: Hydrotant Gel or Hydro-Lane under your hand crème.
- Discolorations: Chiral A Discoloration Solution or Discoloration Solution with Brightening Lotion or Zesty Orange Moisturizer.
- Anti-Aging: Repair Serum, Rejuvenation Serum, Firm & Lift or NATOX under Rejuvenation Crème.
- Exfoliate and hydrate in one: 5% or 10% Glycolic Crème.
You can also use our retinols on your hands. Erase A Line or Retinoxyl Elixir!
Try to apply your serums and moisturizers as close as possible to when you are going to be so that the ingredients can sink in through the night!
If it’s comfortable for you, consider also wearing cotton gloves to sleep a few nights a week to keep the products on your hands, and not your sheets.
Our hands and neck show our age first over the years. Take care of them!

Bioavailability refers to how much, and at what rate, something gets absorbed by your bloodstream. When referring to CBD, understanding the bioavailability can help you determine how much you need to take—and in what form—to ensure a proper dose actually ends up in your system and you feel the desired effects.
To understand bioavailability within the context of hemp-based cannabinoids, it would be helpful to start with some basic science:
To begin, cannabinoids are lipophilic molecules, which means they are oil-based compounds that are not soluble in water. Further, when you place extracted hemp oils into water, they float and are unable to mix or dissolve. This is an issue because our bodies are up to 60% water, and have difficulty dissolving, and more importantly, absorbing these types of molecules.
To connect this back to bioavailability: because cannabinoids are lipophilic molecules, they are very difficult to be absorbed by the bloodstream with high bioavailability. In fact, the chances of passing 100% of any lipophilic molecule into the bloodstream by ingestion is almost 0%.
After decades of research, however, methods have been developed to allow these cannabinoids to be more readily absorbed by our water-based bodies.
One of the better methods is nano-liposomal technology. Essentially, this technology utilizes liposomes, a sort of protective bubble that encapsulates CBD molecules. Using liposomes as carriers, CBD has a nearly 5-6x higher bioavailability.
This being said, it is important to keep in mind that different delivery methods have different effectiveness:
- Inhalation: Inhaling CBD is the most effective method for ensuring a high bioavailability, as high as 40%
- Sublingually: When administered sublingually (via drops held beneath the tongue), CBD oil has a bioavailability of 13% to 19%
- Orally: Oral ingestion may be common, it’s also the least effective method for taking CBD. The oral bioavailability of CBD is between 10% to 20%
- Topically: Because the CBD only interacts with local receptors in your skin, though, it won’t enter the bloodstream, resulting in 0% bioavailability. As a result, topical administration will be ineffective for relieving conditions which require the CBD to bind to cannabinoid receptors in the brain and central nervous system, such as anxiety, epilepsy, or PTSD.
- Topical application however is extremely helpful with inflammation experienced by your skin. Check out our skincare line for a wide variety of topical applications.

For all of winter’s sweeping seasonal highs (fireside gatherings, snowy walks, and ice-skating in Central Park), there are a few less pleasant side effects to note. Enter the onslaught of dry, itchy skin that’s currently settling in for the long haul. While switching to a good moisturizer at the first sign of chill proves helpful, the drier climate and indoor heat may have already taken a toll. Fortunately, there’s still time to get serious about a daily routine to ensure a hydrated, glowing complexion. Here, with the help of New York City dermatologist Shari Marchbein, M.D., is the definitive guide for preventing, soothing, and dealing with dry skin.
Prep Your Home:
The drier the air, the drier the skin. To maximize the amount of water in the air, Marchbein recommends placing a humidifier in the room where you spend the most time, which, in many cases, is the bedroom. “A cool air humidifier increases the moisture level in the air,” helping skin’s barrier stay hydrated, she says. In addition, be sure the heat is kept on low or at a moderate temperature to avoid extra dryness in the air.

Change Up Your Diet:
With a direct connection between the gut and skin health, increasing your daily intake of fats may help with dry skin. Marchbein recommends eating a diet rich in walnuts, olive oil, and avocados (but not to sub them for a proper skin-care routine). While that extra glass of full-bodied red wine may seem like a good idea, Marchbein takes a conservative approach. “Don’t overdo it with alcohol, caffeine, and coffee,” she explains, as they are diuretics that will cause dehydration. And, she says, “drink tons of water.”
La Tourangelle Avocado Oil
Buff Your Skin
No matter how many serums and creams are applied, dry skin will stay dry without some light exfoliation. “Pick up a gentle scrub,” says Marchbein, “something with a mild glycolic or lactic acid to get off the dead skin.” The expert suggests swapping a gentle formula for your regular cleanser two to three times a week. For those with raw or severely dry skin, skip the exfoliator and incorporate a wet washcloth instead for a gentler option. And tailor your Retin-A usage to every other day because, while it’s surely the wrinkle-fighting hero product, it is also a strong exfoliant and “may cause extra dryness during the winter.” Now that the skin is buffed, “[serums and] moisturizers can penetrate and really get to work.”

Slather on an Antioxidant Serum:
While most summertime products get swapped out come winter, serums are the one exception to that rule. “As long as it’s alcohol-free, an antioxidant serum is perfect for year-round usage,” says Marchbein. No matter the climate, skin “gets attacked by free radicals,” she explains, causing sun spots, the breakdown of collagen, and premature fine lines. To prevent the damage, apply a vitamin C formula as a first layer in the morning, before layering on heavier products. And don’t forget the sunscreen—a daily dose of SPF 30 will keep skin covered, even on cold, cloudy days.

Switch to a Heavy Face Cream
Perhaps one of the most important and commonly overlooked steps in the dry skin game is changing to a seriously hydrating moisturizer. “Look for creams, rather than lotions, that are made with ceramides and hyaluronic acid,” Marchbein says. Ceramides aid in the prevention of the skin’s barrier, which is “easily broken down during the winter.” For patients with severely chapped faces, pack on a hefty amount of product, she says, morning and night.
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream
Avoid Harsh Cleansers
Be sure to toss any face washes with drying ingredients, like fragrances or additives, in favor of those with formulated chamomile or oatmeal. “A really gentle cleanser, like Cetaphil, is a great option that won’t strip skin of its natural oils,” which are needed to protect overall moisture, Marchbein says.

Zero In on a Nighttime Routine
Every night before bed, Marchbein recommends sticking to a routine that will ensure healthy skin come morning. After your face serum and moisturizer, apply a gentle eye cream to the under eyes and lids, like Kiehl’s avocado treatment. For extra protection, coat the area with Aquaphor. “The product will seal in the cream and prevent against redness and eczema,” both of which are common during this time of year.
While the heat from an evening shower may feel phenomenal on a chilly day, Marchbein advises to limit rinse time to five minutes or less and to use warm—not hot—water, which only adds to surface dehydration. And instead of irritating soap bars or harsh body washes, pick up a creamy cleanser, like Dove’s gentle formula. “Within 60 seconds of [stepping out of the shower],” she says, apply a thick body moisturizer. “Look for something with mineral oil, lanolin, or ceramides,” she explains, to help skin hold on to moisture throughout the night.
As a last step, Marchbein urges patients to coat hands with a thick moisturizer, like CeraVe, and dab Aquaphor on cuticles and lips before hitting the sheets. And for those who are feeling overly dry, a hydrating sheet mask may be a good idea once a week at bedtime. “Stay away from anything with charcoal or clay,” she warns, citing calming yet hard-working products should contain plenty of hyaluronic acid. Here’s to healthy, hydrated, and happy skin through spring.

What is Aesthetic & Co and who’s behind this crazy thing?!
We interviewed the Owner & Founder of Aesthetic & Co, Ronni Whisner
Tell us about your brand. *
“I have been a licensed Esthetician for about 10 years and in 2020 I made the decision to start my own online company, Aesthetic & Co. It was important that my brand reflected myself and the strong core values that I have. My online store features beauty and wellness products that are all natural, earth and health friendly and specifically chosen by myself. I also provide esthetic mentorships and classes for beauty professionals through my Aesthetic Academy on the site. Graphic design has become a passion of mine and something that I love because it lets me utilize my creativity so it was a no brainer for me to also offer these services for business professionals.”
When did you know that this was the right path for you? *
“I knew I wanted to become an Esthetician my junior year of high school. My hairstylist, who owned her own business, told me about Estheticians and 10 years ago in my small town, no one knew what that was. I loved skin and makeup and the beauty world but I just didn’t have interest in doing hair. As a child, I was always taking care of my skin and trying to do face masks at sleepovers. I then immediately toured Esthetic schools and big spas to get the full experience of the career. I was sold!”
What do you like most about what you do? *
“As a strong empath, I love being a listening ear to my guests and get to make an impact on their life whether that be emotionally or through my services.”
What is the biggest obstacle you have faced in your career, and how did you overcome it? *
“Before Aesthetic & Co, I owned a spa for two years and then merged it with another salon in town. After a year and a half into the merger, I had to make a tough decision to leave that partnership. I never would have thought I would give up my dream and leave something I had put so much blood, sweat, and tears into. I overcame the emotional toll by pushing forward. I learned so much about myself and business during my time as a spa owner and I it has given me the tools to get where I am now. I redirected my attention and started pouring my energy into A+C. I am extremely grateful for that adventure and I am now on a new journey and the more I learn, the more I grow!”
If your phone could ring right now with your dream opportunity, what would that be? *
“That’s a tough one but I think I would love a job in developing beauty companies and brand creation.”
What do you want people to remember most about you and your career? *
“I want to be remembered for doing impactful and positive things while empowering others to be their best selves.”
AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO HEALTHY HAIR FORMULATION
Would you rather continue putting band-aids on hair problems or transform your hair for good?
When choosing items for our A+C online store, it was important for us to find products that reflect our brand and what we stand for. Your hair is just as important as your skin and we wanted something we trusted. If it’s not good for your skin, it is most likely not good for your hair. That being said, when coming across EVOLVh, it was a no brainer that this company was meant for A+C. Their motto: Healthy hair starts with biology & an inside-out approach to formulation. They believe in biology driven, non-topical, non-cosmetic formulation that meets the molecular needs of every strand from deep inside the core of each fiber. EVOLVh products are a cosmetic formulation, relying on topical, old standby ingredients such as panthenol to coat hair and hide imperfections.
Clean innovation is top of mind. They are always on the search for great essential oils and oil blends to bring to you the at-home spa experience. A blend of 9 essential oils is the anchor in many of their products, as well as a new introduction of a single citrus essential oil that has just the right je ne sais quoi character that mixes with their all important amino and fatty acids (just part of the true magic in EVOLVh) that makes their products come to life.
EVOLVh is now using a globally approved preservative for use in natural cosmetic and toiletries formulations, to bring you the best in clean beauty safety. Based on the combination of dehydroacetic acid (DHA) and benzyl alcohol, both organic compounds (It is a combination of ingredients but appears as two separate ingredients per INCI standards at the very end of each product ingredient label), it is globally recognized as a safe ingredient and efficient preservative that meets the highest criteria.
EVOLVH IS AT THE INTERSECTION OF SCIENCE, HEALTH & SUSTAINABILITY
“Earth” and “EVOLVh” both start and end with the same letters – it’s a special connection they share with our beautiful, beloved planet and is symbolic of their values and who they are.
